Welcome to the Semcer Center for Healthcare Innovation.

The Mary Jane and Frank J. Semcer, Sr. '65 Center for Healthcare Innovation was established through their vision and generosity to foster innovation at the intersection of engineering and healthcare. Today, we are building on that foundation by advancing engineering-driven healthcare innovation and addressing some of the most pressing health needs of our time.

Healthcare is entering a new era. As people live longer, many of today's greatest healthcare challenges are no longer defined by a single disease, but by complex interactions among multiple conditions that influence health, function, and independence. Meeting these challenges requires new ways of understanding health, identifying risk earlier, and intervening before irreversible decline occurs. I believe engineering has an increasingly important role to play in making that possible.

At Semcer CHI, we bring together researchers from across Stevens Institute of Technology, along with clinical and industry partners, to develop technologies that provide new ways to measure, monitor, and understand health. Our research integrates multiscale and multimodal engineering approaches with sensing technologies, imaging, artificial intelligence, computational science, and data-driven analysis to better understand health across multiple scales, from physiological processes and functional measures to clinical function.

Our current strategic focus is healthy aging. We are developing engineering technologies that identify early physiological and functional changes affecting metabolic, cognitive, and mobility health, creating opportunities for earlier diagnosis, more informed clinical decision-making, and prevention before irreversible decline occurs.

One of my priorities is to build a collaborative community where engineers, scientists, clinicians, and data scientists work together to address complex healthcare challenges. Through interdisciplinary research, seed funding, education, and partnerships with healthcare systems and industry, we are creating an environment where new ideas can grow into practical solutions that improve health and quality of life.

Constructed as part of the university's newest state-of-the-art research and teaching facility, the Gateway Academic Center, the Semcer Lab modernizes and expands available lab and research space on campus by more than 3,000 square feet.

This multidisciplinary tissue engineering lab was established thanks to a generous gift from alumnus Frank J. Semcer, Sr. '65 and his wife, Mary Jane Semcer.

Semcer, Sr. is chairman and CEO of MICRO, an international contract manufacturer of medical devices and other precision equipment for the healthcare, automotive, aerospace and electronics industries. He is also a member of the Stevens Board of Trustees.
